What’s Making My Furnace So Noisy in West End, NC?

February 28, 2025

When the furnace in your West End, NC home makes an unusual noise, you should immediately suspect that trouble is afoot. After all, a well-functioning furnace should produce a soft hum during operations and perhaps some temporary pops during startup. The noises we’ll discuss, however, typically point to the following problems.

Whistling

Strange as it may seem, your air filters are the most likely culprits responsible for the whistling noises coming from your furnace. Over time, as air passes through these filters, debris will accumulate on them. At some point, flowing air may run past a bit of debris at an odd angle, and the resulting friction may create whistling sounds.

The solution to this problem is to ensure that your furnace’s filters stay as clean as possible by replacing the filter at least once every 90 days. Doing this will also improve overall airflow through your system, which will also raise the system’s overall efficiency.

Rattling

If you hear this noise, debris is almost certainly tumbling around inside your furnace. This debris may be large, or it may be small. It may be pebbles, twigs, acorns, bits of dirt or other stray things that have flown into your furnace.

These things may interfere with your furnace’s ability to function, and removing them may not be a simple matter. Therefore, the ideal way to quell rattling noises is to ask HVAC technicians to complete a maintenance review on your furnace.

Grinding

Grinding noises are a sign that at least one major component inside your furnace requires repairs. To give one example, the system’s bearings may be grinding against something and sustaining damage. If you hear these sounds, turn off your furnace and seek professional help.

To maintain your comfort, your furnace must remain functional through the winter in West End, NC. If your ears tell you that something is wrong, don’t ignore them. Call Sandhills Heating, Refrigeration & Electrical and ask for heating repair services today.
